add emoticon to a theme

i have a question about emoticon and it is so strange that nobody had thi problem too.

i want to add an emoticon to msn theme.
i built the gif, add it in theme.txt giving it a shortcut
pippo.gif (pippo)

F5 but no way, the emoticon doesnt appear.

are there some default sizes and weight?
(mine is 40x50px 5kb)
