It would be helpful if there was an option to permanently store all messages. I'm using the mysql backend so there's not much point to remove old messages. It makes sense to limit the number of messages displayed in the chat window but I'd like to maintain an archive of every chat room.

Look around the log proxy. It stores logs in data/private/logs/

One thing I realized is by default the entire private data directory is accessible from the web as it's under the document root, which means that anyone can get access to the full chat logs (including 'private' messages). I know I could set some config option to move it out of the document root, but would there be a better way/place to store these private files?

the data/private/ directory is protected by .htaccess

ah I see it now in the distribution files. It wasn't in my copy probably because I had at some point deleted the entire private directory.
