Integrating v2 with a MediaWiki user database

Hello, I'm trying to integrate v2.1.0 with a mysql user database, but have honestly no clue where to start. The doc pages don't give any indication on how to log on to the mysql database or how to access the enclosed databases (the user table is all that I need).

I know that the pfc.before.auth hook is what I need, but how do I add it? What settings need to be defined, and what might they be? The server is defined as localhost, I know the db name and the db account and pass, but which files do I modify to access them?
