Total newbie and lost....

Postby johnny0110 » Sun Dec 16, 2012 8:46 pm

Hi guys,

I apologize in advance.... Im a total newbie and know very little about PHP and code. I set up a MyBB forum and then wanted to add a chat room to it. I installed PHPfreechat through the CP on my server, I got into the code and somehow managed to customized it a little and thats about it. I managed to put a new link on my forum to the chat page also. Im 100% totally lost on anything else. I dont understand perimeters or anything else. Im simply trying to get it to register new users and have them be able to chat in the room. Is there a help video or ANYTHING that would help a total newbie like me??? I have read and read and read and I still dont understand it. im Sorry.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

John

Unfortunately, your statements are really too general for us to give you good answers. What, specifically, are you wanting to know or do? The chat should work fine as a stand alone program, what are you wanting to add or change?

I thought I submitted this reply once already.... maybe not....

Well, as I said... I am attempting to add a chat room to my MyBB forum. I have installed phpfreechat from the quick install in my CP on my server. It installed fine and I actually was able to go in and edit the look of the chat room slightly but that's about it. I also went back to my forum and added a link on the menu bar for the chat room. It all works fine, but when you click the link to the chat room, you are dropped right into the chat room as a "guest" (guest643, guest736, guest729, etc.). I have no idea on how to make it so that users would have to register or even pick a name to enter the chat room. I have seen screen captures that show users registering and picking a chat room name. I dont even see any kind of admin controls for phpfreechat. Again.... Im a TOTAL newbie, Im surprised I even got this far.

I would love to get this working. If anyone is willing to help, Im willing to pay you for your time!!!!!! It would be awesome to have my forum users be able to sign into the chat room under their registered name in the forum also!! Is this possible??

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated !!!!! I cant express how much I need this to work as soon as possible.

Thanks !!!!

It should be doing that by default, but I don't know what your cpanel is putting into the parameters. All you need to do is edit the index.php file using the parameter list to make changes to the chat. In this case, it sounds like your cpanel as decided to name everyone guest by default instead of allowing them to choose a name... just remove the parameter called 'nick' (you'll see it) - remove that whole line. The chat should then ask users for their nick as they enter.

Yes, this is possible. What you need to do is find out from the people who make your forum how to get a blank page that prints out the user nick. If you can get the code for that, I can tell you the few steps to take to make it work with the chat. So again, blank page, nick name printed out.

Wolf,

I got it working so that the user has to put in a user name. I am sending users to the chat room from a forum I made in MyBB. I basically put a link in the menu that says "Chat Room". Clicking that takes them to the chat room and the log in screen. If anything at all, I would like to change the log in screen text to say, "Please log in with your registered Forum User Name". Is there a file I can edit the text to have the login screen say this?

As far as the blank page that prints out the user nick, any idea on how I can get that code in MyBB??

Thanks Wolf !!!!

As I said, find out from MyBB's forum. I don't know how their software works, but they will... and the instructions I gave you should not be hard for them. Once they provide that, I can help you with phpfreechat's side of things.
