People here wrote they experienced about 40-80 chatters maximum. But this limit means it is not usable on sites where comes more people. It is pity. I am not curious to test the chat on server I am not the owner of server and want not to make problems. So you don't have experiences with 10-20s refresh? I think this could increase the number of chatters but don't know how much.

Anyway I want to ask about cache. I know that in the data/private/chat are hundreds of files. Why author saves every single information to separate file*? Would not be better for performance to save the data to a few files (few for every user or every channel). I'd like to have a chat with about 90 rooms and for about 150-250 chatters (I now this is not realizable for now). But I think that so many rooms and so many cache files could make problem for server...

Edit:
* - I heard about SQLite for PHP5
http://www.php.net/manual/en/book.sqlite.php
Which would simplify the process of saving and reading data from cache/chat ... and increase the performance. This look like much more better idea then hundreds of files that server have to look for and read informations about them.

I'm wondering if these issues that were mentioned were fixed for 1.3. I think that short of a technology such as Ajax-Push, this is the best open source chat software that's available.

Strangely enough the section mentioned is still on Line 464 in version 1.3. However removing it causes the nicknames not to appear at all which is a bit odd.

I wonder if configuring PFC to work with mysql would fix many of these performance issues, or at least improve the performance.

I'm quickly out-growing use of this, due to serious lag from 40+ users at peak time on my shared hosting... which is a shame because I love how customisable it is... I might have to change over to using something like quakenet, which looks ugly :(

I am shocked that shared server restrictions let you go so far..

Great chatroom application. Meets nearly all the expectations i had with a chatroom. Just, i got anxious on the performance part after reading this thread. Can anyone please help if they have used other open sourced chatrooms like https://blueimp.net/ajax/ or some others, and found better performance. That will really help.

Thanks all.

I am going to be frank with you, I have tried Ajaxchat and I can only say it Rocks big time, but it has a big lack of customization, no nick emos in the nick list, lack of avatares, nick coloring, and the customization of the whole chat its a pain..

COMET server made with RUby is the best thing about it, because if you get to work fine it will basically have as many as 100's people.. but its difficult never had it to work well..

I used it and also made some Integrations for it.. the Project its almost dead because the main coder left it alone... and people that is in charge of it its not doing much to maintain it alive..

Nothing comes close to PFC, you can make a beautiful chat room , have emos on the nick area, have avatars, easy to integrate, and performance its better than before although dont spec over 50 people without having any performance issues...

that's all I can say..

Hi re*s.t.a.r.s.*2,
That was quick and really informative. First of all, thanks a lot for that. I too saw that it's forum did not have much activity now. So, if i wish to add gifs with the nicks, and other customisations it will be difficult on that code.

I think i will prefer pfc, if that is the case. Thanks again :)

I am having a big problem in the client side, when I have over 150+ users, the chat room will freeze the browser, even in chrome, firefox, ie or safari. I would like to know how to solve it. It is really a very big problem which i am now facing.

whoa,

I am impressed that you got so far...

can you tell the refresh frequency that you have setup...

server specs,

$params['refresh_delay'] its the parameters that dictates at how much your PFC its refreshing...

setting it up to $params['refresh_delay']= 6000; will make it refresh every 6 seconds..

regards..

But the problem is when init login to the chatroom, the ping time will raise up to over 25000 or 4xxxx ms and the back to normal in order to load everything, which cause so many user cannot access to the page. I am trying to set the refresh delay to 6000, see see anything different.

And I can have more than 500+ users in the chatroom in the same time, hope this problem can be fixed.
