Are you hostgator user, if so that could be the reason but only occurs on IE7 Or 8... and maybe FF.

No,we use our own servers, apache web server installed on a debian OS,the problem look like only appears when the client uses IE
thanks

Do you have any apache modules enabled beside the default ones?

We think SUPHP is the culprit, but we I am not sure, since I changed to a VPS with ubuntu server, those time out wen away complete ...

so check that out..

Same problem here. Users timing out every now and then. I increased the timeout to 90000. It helps to a certain extend. Yet, the problem is not solved.

Some of my users have this same issue.

We're running pfc-1.3 on a Ubuntu 10.04 server in witch we have full control. SUPHP is not installed.

Installed packages, related to apache:
ii apache2
ii apache2-mpm-prefork
ii apache2-utils
ii apache2.2-bin
ii apache2.2-common
ii libapache2-mod-passenger
ii libapache2-mod-php5

But there are users not using IE that are also effected, so I don't think it's browser dependent although IE users are the ones mostly affected.
Will try to increase timeout time, as it seems this can make it a bit better.

Users report it got worse after tying the chat with phpbb3 db.

Where shall I put the timeout var?

The timeouts in 1.3 were so massive, that last night we had to go back to 1.2. This does not fix the problem, but at least it's usable. 1.3 were for us useless. All users were affectet, and timeouts came more and more frequent as the number of users got higher.

the chat is located at http://chat.kammeret.no but you'll need a account at www.kammeret.no/forum to access it.

I have no idea then, but is working now with pfc1.2?

if so, did you change anything in the 1.3 ?

As I said before I changed to VPS that went away and another friend here did same and also got good results...

Well, it's working. Some IE users still have some issues with timeouts, but in 1.3 all browsers and all users were heavily affected.

A couple of changes have been made to pfc.
Added some custom commands: http://www.phpfreechat.net/forum/viewtopic.php?id=1232 and http://www.phpfreechat.net/forum/viewtopic.php?id=1349
and integrated chat with phpbb3 with this one: http://www.phpfreechat.net/forum/viewtopic.php?id=2266

We used to be on a VPS, but our userbase have grown so big we are now spreading the load over 3x2U Rackserver. It seems a bit drastic to setup a VPS just to get pfc-1.3 to work.

I'm betting installing a fresh copy was what did it, not the fact that it was 1.2

I'm using the same modifications in both 1.2 and 1.3. But I can try to do a "clean" install of 1.3 on the same server to check if that helps.

Right, my point wasn't the mods, but that it might be related to the cache or something. Could you try a fresh version of 1.3?

Ah.. Well, of course I can try that. But that is somewhat what I did, or at least I thought.

I got a folder structure like this:

/www/chat/pfc-1.2/
/www/chat/pfc-1.3/
/www/chat/index.php

So the update was done like described in FAQ:
Changing in index.php:
require_once dirname(__FILE__).'/pfc-1.2/src/phpfreechat.class.php';
To
require_once dirname(__FILE__).'/pfc-1.3/src/phpfreechat.class.php';

Then clearing the cache and rehashing the chat.

I'll try to install a fresh 1.3 to another location on the server, to see if that will help. Might be a couple of days until I'm able to do this, but I'll post back with my results. Thank you for your input!

I have been searching all of the timeout related posts here and don't seem to find the solution to the problem in this thread. I am running a WHM VPS with Centos and phpfreechat 1.3.

We have on average around 25 users in our chat, and are finding the same symptoms here. IE users v 7, 8 or 9 are getting disconnected without knowing. But when they type something (maybe 1 hour later) they realise they have missed conversations for the last hour.

Many users have realized this does not happen with google chrome or firefox.

Since we host our own server, we cannot simply change hosts.

Many of the threads here suggest to increase the timeout parameter or another post suggesting to send the /update request every 5 seconds, however, all of these people continue to have the symptoms after making the changes.

I have not yet seen the resolution posted anywhere.

Is there a solution to the IE timeouts, that I cannot find? Or is this just an elusive bug that has been going on for some time?
