Yes Indeed I went to your test chat and yes I had the time out error although its a bit different than mine issue in you chat Ie8 would time out but if you type sometime it will reappear and resume working, at my site it would time out but if you type anything the error "you must be connected to send message would show up" and you have to refresh the page in order to work again..
Another fellow "bhootnath" went there and saw the same, although at his site this wouldn't happens I tested With same IE8 and it did not time out once.. and he is using same version than mine the only differences are that he is using a dedicated server on linux, and you are using hostgator and I did too use Hostgator but stopped using it because I thought they were the cause of my time out issues..
I am now using my own server, using Linux ubuntu server Jackalope and that issue with the timeout also would came up.
I was thinking if the refresh delay its not working properly with IE8 but cant really understand how would I go to test it or do something..

quick fix re*s.t.a.r.s.*2 helped point out to me, I ended up changing the variable refresh delay steps to:

Code: Select all
  var $refresh_delay_steps = array(2000,20000,2000);

When I get more time I'll (try to) explain why, or maybe restars2 can better than I can.

indeed, I think $refresh_delay_steps dont like too much IE at all, we changed while testing with this parameter and find out that making the chat to update more frequently while idle on IE it will not time out, now this seems to work in hostgator host...
we dont know for other host but this seems to be working IE would time out after 10 to 20 minutes of idling.. before it would do that after a minute or so...

I did some "experimenting" this morning and with the setting I have (the one I posted above), I ended up right back at square one. IE was timing out like it was before. :( I changed the array to

var $refresh_delay_steps = array(2000,600000,2000);

we'll see how that goes.

not sure. It seems to do it (timeout that is) after 20 minutes. Have the variable var $refresh_delay_steps = array(2000,20000,2000); like we decided last night. It seems to improve it a little but I would like to have it more reliable than that before i use it. I'm gonna try it locally on wamp see if i get the same problem.

What can I say, the only think I can think of , is that somehow HG got some weird settings that would mess up the chat...

after 20 minute timeout seem better for me that a 1 minute time out you had before..

but sometimes it does timeout 1-2 mins after being in chat, its random , even after changing the variable. It may be 20 mins and it may be 2.

I have this on localhost (wamp), with default settings and so far so good.

I have figured out it's my host, so I was wondering if anybody has any host they'd suggest that allows Chat Scripts, has good review, reliable and been around for a few years.

Host Gator came up with this error regarding the timeout issue but don't know why

Handler for application/x-httpd-php5 returned invalid result code 70007, referer: http://chickentalk.org/phpfreechat/

Are you hostgator user, if so that could be the reason but only occurs on IE7 Or 8... and maybe FF.

aside from the spam post made by user servershosting7...

It seems to be a server side issue with Host Gator. The issue causes basically any browser to timeout, whether it be IE, Chrome, or Firefox, but it seems to timeout IE more often. I have VPS hosting with LAMP (Ubuntu) and the chat works perfectly.
