I see that it's possible to set an admin password (haven't figured out which file to add the parameter to, but I will find it eventually). [Update: I figured it out.]

I don't see any evidence that it is possible to totally restrict all chat access, such that only users with a Username and Password can use chat. Am I right?

You're right. You need to write your own software or use 3rd party software for that. We have some phpbb implementations that would work down in the phpbb forum below.

Good tip. Thanks for the quick response.
I just successfully used the password-protect.php script from http://www.zubrag.com/forum/ to accomplish my objective.
Now anyone who navigates to my chat.php file has to type in a username and password first.
