Syntax error?

Hi, I looked this initialization error in the forum but I only found it explained as free server issue.
I have a VPS so I don't have the free server issue, however when I install the plugin on my wordpress blog, first of all I have to do it manually because the automatic install doesn't work, and when I finally have the plugin activated and I put the tag in a post, all i get is:

phpFreeChat cannot be initialized, please correct these errors:

cannot create /home/user/public_html/wp-content/plugins/phpfreechat/src/../data/public/themes/default

Is there something I can do to fix this? It looks like a syntax error to me.
I have the chat installed on the server and it's working, so what do I have to change to have this plugin working?

Please answer directly, don't redirect me to other posts as I tried them all to no avail. Thank you.

Why doesn't the author make this plugin script work right off the bat?
