During setup yesterday (24 hours ago), I indicated i want log files made.
I ftp'd in tonight and found an empty /data/private directory.
Where else could they be?
Also, are they dynamic enough that I can find them immediately? so should I be able to ftp in and see what was typed 10 mins ago?

Yes, assuming your FTP browser has updated.
