Channels on Joomla

I try to create channels through data passed by URL:
Example:

Www.miwebste.com7index.php?channel=pepe

I can do?

$user = 'Diana';

$utparams['channels'] = explode(",", $user);


This works perfectly, but this one:


http://www.mywebsite.com/index.php?channel=Diana


$user = $_REQUEST[channel];

$utparams['channels'] = explode(",", $user);

In this case it does not work
