In the version 2.8.0.3 no XHTML-valid code is generated; a closing bracket is missing in the XHTML code delivered to the browser.
In order to fix this change the following file

themes/default/templates/chat.html.tpl.php: line 83
// ]]

This line should read:
// ]]>

Well, this is more an acadamic bug; most browsers are not too picky about this, and probably the user will not recognize. But actually this missing closing bracket causes all XHTML validators to complain about errors on the page (due to the closing bracket).
This is also why we took notice: we had some other problems on the page and wondered why the validators kept complaining.
