How do I use all the PFC features and commands?

Postby billk » Wed May 15, 2013 7:24 pm

As a complete newbie to php scripting, the more I work with PFC, the more impressed I am with the work done to develop it. Great job guys! What I fined missing though, is any detailed instructions on how to use it, after it's been installed and working. It's wonderful features, are a mystery to find and use. I see posts about how to limit the number of rooms users can open, but how the heck do they open one? I see talk of private chat rooms, but no instructions about how it's done. After many hours of reading the forum, (trying to find answers to other questions) I found a reference to "clicking" the online user icon, in a "question" about using commands. Oh yah, I thought, I'll just look at the code in the src/commands/files and the comments will give me a hint about what they do. Well, I saw the command "/quit". Ahh, this must be how I should "exit" the chat. Well, what it did was, erase all the posts from the chat window, but the cursor was still blinking in the message field as normal. Later, when I returned to the chat page the posts were back. What is the purpose of "/quit"?

My current question! Is there a way to break a line (similar to html <br>) while entering the text to be posted. I find it easier to compose a post in a text editor, and paste it, rather than to use the single line window. I discovered that text decoration can be done by entering etc. in the text but cannot discover a way to break a line. e.g. to format a list of names etc.

I would be very happy to compose a "stickey" of what I've learned to assist other newbies, in the actual use of this wonderful chat program.. Like just how to "/rehash". Simple??? It is when you know your supposed to do it in PFC chat text field and NOT in Win OS "Run" command. Or that the reason you get that "You need to be connected to post" message (which makes it impossible to "/rehash") may be that the PFC "cookie" hasn't been put on your puter. BTW, if you are getting that message, go to a "Demo" chat. It will load the cookie. Then go back to your chat and it may work. (and will likely continue to work on your puter until the cookie is deleted) I still have that problem with one of my chat pages...

Maybe "Oldwolf" or "re*s.t.a.r.s.*2" could assist in the stickey... Billk

/help should give you a list of commands for ideas on what to try.

http://www.phpfreechat.net/commands is the page you are probably interested in?

/quit means that announcement that you've left the chat is made, and you can't see what's in the chat anymore - other people in the chat will see it behave normally.

Some quick examples:
/join [insert a room name here] if it's not locked down will let you create a side chat room.
/privmsg [nick] - direct message to another person!
/invite [nick] [chatroom] - you can use this command to invite a user into a side room.

Thanks Qem! I'll bet I saw the command page for v2.x a dozen times ( not much there yet) but never saw the link you posted. It's exactly what I wanted... I also noticed, that in my first post the text decoration codes I typed didn't show on the board. That must be what the "code box" above is for. I'll try again.
To create decoration like "bold" and "italic" in text to be pasted into the text box, place
Code: Select all
,
around those words. I sure wish br worked that way too. I wonder if the code "frankiekam" wrote for his Moodle version of PFC to enable br, could be added somewhere in the standard v1.6 code to do it.
Thanks again Qem, Billk
