kick and ban NOT WORKING for admin!

I have set up myself as the admin - identified myself and all is good. I can't kick or ban people from the default room created, I can make myself OP and DEOP people but for some reasons those functions aren't working... is there something I've done wrong? My chat is here:

just as i posted this, i did a google search and found out the problem if i type /kick "username in quotes" then it will work. was surprised to see that this wasn't mentioned in the chat commands or documentation.
