I too get a similar problem and if I figure out how to fix this, I will let you know too.

The only real difference was the "src/../data" in my URL.

This is what I am getting:

cannot create /var/www/vhosts/domain.com/httpdocs/chat/src/../data/public/themes/default
cannot create /var/www/vhosts/domain.com/httpdocs/chat/src/../data/public/themes/default
/var/www/vhosts/domain.com/httpdocs/chat/src/../data/private/chat/s_b289199c9f289c81bcd23ac0b821f01c can't be created
/var/www/vhosts/domain.com/httpdocs/chat/src/../data/private/chat/s_b289199c9f289c81bcd23ac0b821f01c is not writeable
/var/www/vhosts/domain.com/httpdocs/chat/src/../data/private/chat/s_b289199c9f289c81bcd23ac0b821f01c is not readable

[I tried changing the private/public above to apache and apache via chown and chgrp, however that resulted in many more errors]

Hi,
What I ended up doing was going in and creating the directories by hand (e.g mkdir default and mkdir s_b289199c....). I used chmod 777 to make them writable and it gets passed the install, but isn't fully working. I was NOT sure they were directories or files, but obviously they were supposed to be directories, not files.

Will that hurt anything later? e.g. will the s_b289199c... change ever? I presume not, but I guess I'll find out.

I still don't see why it wouldn't create them automatically, but if anyone else has the problem you might try just creating them by hand.

Now I have another problem and it is broken links. You can see it here if you wish (http://halloween.com/chat-test1/). It appears all the buttons (e.g. disconnect etc) are not working.

I believe this is a permission problem as the other one seems to have been and if I figure out where the permissions were incorrect, I will post it here.

Hopefully this will help someone and if you have any hints, please let me know! Thanks!

And another followup. I did make sure that all the permissions were correct and that the directory and all the files it contains are owned by the correct user and the correct group (the one that owns all the other files in the web folder, phpbb etc).

I did it with the commands below, but "username" is replaced by the user name and "psaserv" is the group. chown -R should recursively changed the ownership and the find line should recursively chmod.

chown -R username:psaserv .
find . -name "*" -exec chmod go+rw {} ;

Unfortunately it didn't help. :-)

The only strange thing I notice is that the "s_69......." file in /data/private is owned by the apache user and apache group. (The Apache user IS in the psaserv group though so it shouldn't matter, but we'll see.).

I am going to try to change the user and group for these files/directories to apache and see what happens then. Ok, the results are:

After changing the user and group to apache, now the chat is actually working (http://halloween.com/chat-test2/), typing and chatting now works. The buttons still are not working, they are showing text (e.g. "Cut down," "Disconnect," "hide nicknames" etc.

:-)
