smileys getting in way of urls

sometimes when pasting urls that happen to contain something that the program thinks is a smiley (e.g. :S), the entire url link is screwed up badly with a smiley inserted in the middle. It seems like if it knows there's a link, it shouldn't do smiley processing. Otherwise, some way to disable or enable smileys when wanted would be nice.
