doesnt work

hey.. its hard to explain my problem, i have htaccess setup so that index's will redirect to / (for seo purposes, like google.com/index goes to google.com/)

so anyway, this is causing problems i think cause my chat wont work, and i cant figure out how to turn this redirect thing off for my chat directory. I added an htaccess with "rewriteengine off", but now when i type in chat/index.php it redirects to cgi-bin/php.cgi/chat/ and gives a 404 error.

im so confused...
