PhpFreeChat, in my opinion, is an extremely clever piece of software, interlacing PHP, Ajax and Javascript. It does the job instantly, unzipped and uploaded. For a beginner, it's fantastic

It is extremely simplistic in design and ease of use

I am however glad that I took a week or two before donating some well-earnt Euros

However, the other side to that, is that to attempt to raise the standard of the interface to something more 'chic' or stylish, a great deal of time (a great deal) needs to be invested

Attempts to seek answers at this forum are simply a waste of time. Some questions remain here, unanswered, after two years.

Fumbling with piece-meal answers found in this forum is a dangerous activity - the tweaks are still here for earlier versions, and they create havoc if implemented.

ALL POSTS that pertain to earlier versions should be archived, or better, deleted.

If the original creator has become disinterested, and never answers questions, it becomes a daunting task to take the package to the next level.

In that light, despite months of enthusiastic experimenting, I think I need to stop bothering and just go buy a package off the shelf.

Perhaps I should have done that back in June or July.

:(

I see you're having problems with Internet Explorer too - are you getting answers here ? I bet not. It's a shame. It's almost as if the fire, the vision, that inspired this lovely wee chat room software has just died out.

If this was my baby I'd be nursing it back into health, and into a brand new shape and vision cos it really is lovely. Just impossible to discuss, to get help with ...

Even the dudes who have cracked the several wish-list items* won't say how they did it. It's not a matter of giving up - it's simply being stumped, and no one answering the Help Line.

:(

*IE compatibility - that's 50% of the world, folks !
*nicklist in a fixed div, not floating
*paste thumbnail image from the web straight into chat

that's it ?
despite the plea for a re-vitalisation, a plea for injecting new enthusiasm, and some advice and guidance ?

LOL c'mon dude, stop pouting, make a SUPPORT Forum a truly supportive Forum ??
You have people out here in the big world who love what you've done. But if you aren't going forward, you're stagnating. Sorry. That's the way it is.

Hey, I could have just shrugged and walked away but I'm trying to shout into the deafening silence, helllooooooooooo, we need you, come back !!

That's it. Did you expect that if you threatened to leave us I would beg you to stay? Did you think that by leveraging the fact that you might move on, I would have a sudden revival of heart and see things your way? You need to get your facts straight.
I tried to be polite, despite your rude arrogance... but sure, let's break this down.

I'm sorry, I must have missed that plea for re-vitalization, enthusiasm, advice and guidance, amongst the complaints and your threat that you were moving on. My mistake.
waiheke wrote:LOL c'mon dude, stop pouting, make a SUPPORT Forum a truly supportive Forum ??

Pouting? You honestly think that this thread made me pout? You are very full of yourself to think that I would be so grievously distraught over a (free) user, with your sort of attitude, leaving. To be blunt, the only thing I feel when someone like you comes in and posts a message so rude and whiny is relief, because you're moving on. I'd much rather support the users who come here humble and appreciative of my voluntary time. My answer was as it is, a polite way of telling you that your welcome to leave at any time, no one has you strapped down here. It's funny that you claim I'm pouting, because that's the exact word I would use to describe your first post. You came here, like a kid upset with the answer you got to something you wanted, and stamped your feet and shouting "I'm Leaving!" And you are welcome to do just that.

I understand it can sometimes be frustrating when you can't finds answers to the questions you seek, but sometimes there's nothing I can do about that. Let me re-explain my job here to you, since you haven't been around that long, but your sense of entitlement has provided you the right to complain about and insult me:
I am a volunteer forum moderators and supporter.
I am NOT paid to help you, nor am I required to help you. I don't get some sort of compensation in any way, other than the satisfaction of users when I am able to help them solve a problem.
All the free support you've received from me (and I HAVE supported you, many times) was in my freedom to decide to do so.
I did not write any of the core of PFC, and thusly do not know how to fix the IE problem, or I clearly would have done so a year ago, for the sake of the users who come here politely seeking help.

I have spent many, many hours on this forum supporting and helping users to get their chat running and help them add features they want. I am not able to fix core problems like the IE bug, or I would do that as well. I have a limited amount of time I can spend here in the forums, and I try to make the best of it. If your not satisfied with the support I provide, stop seeking it, or move on. But my skill-sets aren't going to change, nor is the time I have available, for obvious reasons.

I think it's down right arrogant of you to claim that you or others are not getting support or advice, or that posting here is a waste of time. You belittle and undermine all the time I've spent here, simply because it's not good enough for you. It's rude, and it's immature. Usually, I would have just ignored your reply entirely, but I'll admit your reply was just too much to let go.

So in short, I return to what I first said:

Damn is like if I browse the forum to find this, no I am here around to learn more...

The difference being, re*s.t.a.r.s.*2, that you're not harassed about how you help people by other users during your free time. You're not told that your volunteer help is ineffective and pointless, are you?

C'mon Old Wolf - be fair, okay?

1. Where did I say that ? They're your words, not mine. There is NOTHING like that in Post1.
2. If you must zero in on the brickbat, then you need to be balanced, and acknowledge the boquets too
3. My posting has been reasonable - you have acted already, in part, to archive the out-of-date stuff. So Occam's Razor would suggest that if one portion of a post is reasonable, another part might be as well.
4. I have contributed information, just as much as I have asked questions. I have earnt the right surely, to ask the "hard" questions. Don't shoot the messenger, okay?

This is about information. Of the 34 posts I have made, only 1 'rattles the cage' and it does not make me rude or arrogant or anything like that - in fact, I have been polite, but have also been frustrated. Surely, if you want to use the words "rude and "arrogant" wouldn't that apply to ignoring people ?? And you say yourself that normally you would ignore .. and that is the nub of the problem.

I'm sorry if you took it personally, OldWolf - it was not so intended.
I am now privy to the information that you too, are a volunteer contributor. Well done!
Further, my provocative, but also congratulatory, post was not ignored. Can we continue discussion ?

It's - seriously - a plea for some dialogue that will let your keen and converted PHPFreeChat users push forward into an ever better product.

Being ignored - please count the threads where a question or query receives no answer - is not the way forward. 'Rattling the cage' has at least opened up a dialogue, wouldn't you agree?

Has Kerphi moved on, to better things ??
Is it just us guys now ?
That may be a key question.

When I said ignore, I clearly wasn't referring to questions, I was referring to comments directed at me and how I spend my time here. There's a large, and obvious, difference. The reason threads go unanswered is because I don't have the time, or the total knowledge, to answer them. And generally speaking, most of the ones I leave unanswered are because they're looking to get the chat to do something it's not designed to do. I frankly will not spend all my time helping one user at a time make their chat do something beyond what it's meant to do when it only benefits that user.

Either way, I'm going to let this go at this point. I could sit and refute every point, then you could refute my points, and we'd neither convince one another. I've had my say and you know my thoughts, proceed as you please.
