Adding simple command line buttons

I would like to add buttons that can add prepared text strings into the input box, e.g. "/me " et c. Pretty much like the send button, only in a more general principle; ideally, it should be possible to transform smileys into that.
Most IRC clients have additional buttons for commands; that would allow us to add buttons for custom commands , and would open a whole new world of functionality for PFC.
I could even help coding this, since I know a little Javascript and PHP (though I haven't worked with JSON yet). The only thing I need some help with is... where to start?
