Unique request for \"bbcode\" replacement

So, I need to be able to basically take some text from a line in chat, parse something on the server, and have the result replace the text in the chat... having looked at the code, the bbcode-style stuff is being performed on the client side... I can handle this, I assume that I'm going to have to use ajax to pull my result stuff, I was just hoping there might be some existing function I could use as opposed to having to use my own... any thoughts?
